Compatibility with Children
  • Age appropriate: Not recommended for children under 13 (PG-13 in modern terms). The Film contains violence (battles, executions), dark themes (genocide, destruction of the world), and creepy elements (faceless mutants, dystopian atmosphere).
  • Considerations:
    • Accounts: War scenes and atomic bomb explosions can annoy young children. Dialogues about fanaticism and self-destruction may be difficult for a child to understand.
    • Education: It can spark discussions about interspecies conflict or the impact of war for adolescents, but it needs parental guidance.
    • Entertainment: The action and science fiction world may appeal to teenagers who love sci-fi, but the gloomy atmosphere is less suitable for children looking for a light story.
  • Recommendations: Suitable for teens 13+ who are interested in dystopian science fiction, with parental supervision to discuss heavy themes. For younger children, consider lighter sci-fi movies like Wall-E or Zathura.

Sinopsis Lengkap “Beneath the Planet of the Apes” (1970)

“Beneath the Planet of the Apes” is a sequel to the 1968 film “Planet of the Apes,” which continues the story of a dystopian world where intelligent apes rule over humans. The film was directed by Ted Post, written by Paul Dehn and Mort Abrahams, and stars James Franciscus, Charlton Heston, Kim Hunter, and Maurice Evans. Here is the most complete synopsis of the film:

The Film begins with a flashback from the end of” Planet of the Apes", in which astronauts George Taylor (Charlton Heston) and Nova (Linda Harrison), a mute human woman, go down the coast after discovering the terrible truth that the planet they are exploring is a future Earth that has been destroyed. They discover the buried remains of the Statue of Liberty, revealing the destruction of human civilization as a result of nuclear war.
Meanwhile, the story switches to a rescue mission from Earth. Another spaceship, led by astronaut John Brent (James Franciscus), is sent to search for Taylor and his crew. Brent's plane crashes and lands on the same planet in 3955. Brent, the only survivor with his dying companion, soon realizes that the planet is ruled by apes who have a structured society with a strict social order: gorillas as military, orangutans as politicians and scholars, and chimpanzees as scientists and intellectuals.
Brent explores the Forbidden Zone, a barren region forbidden by the Apes, and encounters Nova, who is now wearing Taylor's ID. Nova takes Brent to Ape City, where the ape society is led by Dr. Zaius (Maurice Evans), an orangutan who knows the truth about the origins of humans and apes but hides it to maintain stability. Brent menyusup ke kota dan bertemu dengan Zira (Kim Hunter) dan Cornelius (David Watson, menggantikan Roddy McDowall), dua simpanse liberal yang bersimpati pada manusia. They help Brent understand the situation and uncover that Taylor has disappeared after exploring the Forbidden Zone.
Meanwhile, gorillas led by General Ursus (James Gregory) Drive a military campaign to conquer the Forbidden Zone, which they believe harbors a threat. Ursus took advantage of the ape people's fear of the unknown to mobilize for war, although Zaius doubted this decision.
Here, he discovers a community of mutant humans who survived a nuclear war. These mutants have telepathic abilities, radiation-disfigured faces, and worship a giant nuclear bomb named “Alpha Omega”, whom they consider to be a God. The mutants are led by Mendez (Paul Richards), who worships the bomb in a sinister religious ritual. They use telepathic illusions to scare the Apes and guard their territory.
Brent is imprisoned by mutants and reunited with Taylor, who is also captured. It turned out that Taylor had been detained after exploring the Forbidden Zone. The mutants force Brent and Taylor to fight each other through telepathic control, but Zira, who secretly follows them, helps free them. Brent, Taylor, and Nova unite to fight the mutants, while an army of Ursus gorillas approaches the underground ruins to attack.
The climax of the film takes place in a brutal battle between an army of apes and mutants. Mutants attempt to activate the Alpha Omega bomb as a last resort to destroy their enemies. Taylor and Brent fight to stop the activation of the bomb, but the situation goes awry. Nova is killed in the chaos, leaving Taylor even more distraught. Brent manages to kill Ursus, but is himself shot dead by an army of apes. Taylor, who was seriously injured, tried to warn Dr. Zaius about the dangers of bombs, but Zaius refuses to listen, calling humans a curse.
In the last moment, Taylor, dying, falls into the control panel of the Alpha Omega bomb, accidentally activating it. The Film ends with a powerful nuclear explosion that destroys the entire planet, shown with the screen fading to white. The concluding narrative states “ " in one of the countless mysteries of the universe, a grain of sand known as Earth vanished from existence.”

Important themes and elements

"Beneath the Planet of the Apes” deepens themes from the first film, such as the conflict between science and religion, racism, and the consequences of nuclear war. The Film also highlights the destructive nature of humanity, depicted through bomb-worshiping mutants and apes torn apart by military ambitions. Unlike the first film, the sequel has a darker tone and ends in total destruction, reflecting the Cold War-era fear of a nuclear apocalypse.
Production Context
The Film was produced on a lower budget than its predecessor, which is evident from the use of simpler sets and effects. Although it received mixed reviews for being considered less original than the first film, “Beneath the Planet of the Apes” remains an important part of the franchise, introducing elements such as telepathic mutants that reappear in subsequent films.
