Synopsis

Town of Salem is a multiplayer online game that combines elements of social deduction, role-playing and strategy. Developed by BlankMediaGames, the game was first released on December 15, 2014 and is available on various platforms such as web browsers, Steam, iOS, and Android. The game is inspired from classic party games like Werewolf and Mafia, with over 5 million registered users as of June 2017.
In Town of Salem, 7 to 15 players are randomly assigned roles belonging to the three main factions: Town (good townspeople), Mafia (an evil group that wants to finish off the townspeople), and Neutral (like serial killers or witches who have their own goals). Each role has a special ability, such as a doctor who heals, a sheriff who investigates, or a serial killer who kills secretly. The game takes place in night and day phases:
  • Night: Players use their role abilities, such as killing, healing, or investigating.
  • Lunch: Players discuss via chat to suspect and accuse who is considered evil. A majority vote can bring a person to justice.
  • Defense and judgment: Defendants defend themselves, and the city chooses whether they are guilty (hanged) or innocent.
The Game emphasizes lies, strategy, deduction, and social interaction through chat, where players must convince others or cheat to achieve their faction's goals.

Compatibility with Children

Town of Salem not specifically designed for children and less suitable for them for several reasons:
  1. Violent content and Dark Theme: The game focuses on murder, deception, and execution (e.g., hanging), which can be emotionally upsetting to children or difficult for them to understand. Themes such as serial killers and mafia are more appropriate for a more mature audience.
  2. Complexity and strategy: Gameplay requires an understanding of strategy, social deduction, and the ability to lie or detect lies, which may be too complicated for children under the age of adolescence (13 years and older). Children may have trouble understanding the roles or rules of the game without guidance.
  3. Social interaction and chat risk: This Game involves online chat with other players, including strangers, which may increase the risk of exposure to abusive language or inappropriate interactions. Although the chat language settings can be changed to English, parental controls are still required to ensure safety.
  4. Lack Of Official Tutorials: Some new players complain about the lack of a clear tutorial, which can be frustrating for children not understanding how to play.
Age Recommendation: Town of Salem more suitable for teenagers aged 13 years and above (with parental supervision) due to adult themes, the complexity of strategies, and the potential for uncontrolled online interactions. For children under that age, the game is not recommended due to its heavy content and the potential psychological impact of violent themes.
Alternatives for children: For children, more friendly games such as Roblox (with parental control settings), Carmen Sandiego, or My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic it is more suitable because it supports creativity, social skills and is free from violent themes.
Tips for parents:
  • If your child wants to try Town of Salem, accompany them to explain the context of the game and monitor chat interactions.
  • Use privacy settings to limit interaction with strangers.
  • Set playtime limits to prevent addiction.
Conclusion, Town of Salem is an interesting game for teenagers and adults who like strategy and social deduction, but it is not suitable for children because of its theme and complexity.
