Directed by Jake Schreier with a script written by Eric Pearson, Joanna Calo, and Lee Sung Jin, the film presents an antihero concept that differs from traditional superhero teams such as The Avengers. The Film follows a group of individuals with a dark past—former criminals, hitmen, and antiheroes—who are forced to work together on a dangerous secret mission under the control of the United States government. With complex character dynamics, intense action, dark humor, and exploration of redeeming themes, Thunderbolts offering a new, more grounded yet suspenseful experience in the MCU universe.
The story begins with Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), a former Black Widow assassin trained in the Red Room, who is struggling with the emptiness of life after the death of her adopted sister, Natasha Romanoff (Avengers: Endgame). Yelena works as a secret agent for Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), an ambitious and manipulative CIA director, known for her pursuit of power and control in the MCU. Valentina, who previously appeared in Black Widow and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, forming a team Thunderbolts to run secret operations that ordinary superheroes cannot handle. This trap forces the team to confront each other's dark pasts, from Yelena's trauma over Natasha's loss, Bucky's inner conflicts as a former assassin, to John Walker's moral dilemmas as a controversial antihero.
