Background
After Skynet, the artificial intelligence that controls the machines, launched a global nuclear attack in 2004 (known as Judgment Day), the world turned into a barren battlefield. The remnants of humanity unite in the Resistance to fight Skynet and his army of robots, including The Terminator. John Connor, destined to become the leader of the resistance, struggles to fulfill a prophecy that he will save humanity.
Plot
The Film opens with a flashback in 2003, in which Marcus Wright, a death row inmate, signs his body to be donated to scientific research by Dr. Serena Kogan dari Cyberdyne Systems. The story then jumps to the year 2018, where John Connor (Christian Bale) leads an attack on a Skynet facility. He discovers Skynet's plans to develop the T-800 series Terminator, a more advanced and lethal model. However, the attack leads to the destruction of the facility, and Connor is the only survivor.
Meanwhile, a mysterious man named Marcus Wright (Sam Worthington) emerges from the ruins, unaware that he has been “revived” after his death in the past. Marcus meets Kyle Reese (Anton Yelchin), a brave teenager who is a member of the Resistance, and a mute girl named Star. Kyle tells about the Resistance and the fight against Skynet. However, their group is attacked by Skynet machines, and Kyle and Star are captured by the Harvester, a giant machine that gathers humans for experiments.
John Connor, now an important leader in the Resistance, receives information that Skynet is compiling an assassination list, with himself as the primary target and Kyle Reese as the secondary target. Connor is shocked to learn that Kyle Reese, who in the future will become his father, is now in danger. Meanwhile, Marcus escapes a machine attack and meets Blair Williams (Moon Bloodgood), a Resistance pilot. The Resistance leaders, led by General Ashdown, plan a massive attack on Skynet's main headquarters using jamming signals that can disable the machines. However, Connor realizes that Skynet is deliberately leaking the signal to lure the Resistance into a trap. He pleads for the attack to be postponed until he can save the human captives, including Kyle, but Ashdown refuses and removes Connor's command.
Marcus, now considered a traitor, escapes from the custody of the Resistance and promises to help Connor. He goes to a Skynet facility to search for Kyle, where he encounters a projection of Dr. Serena Kogan, who reveals that Marcus was created to lure Connor and Kyle to Skynet. Although designed as Skynet's weapon, Marcus chooses to rebel against his creator because he still has a human heart and a desire to make amends for his past.
Connor infiltrates Skynet's headquarters to rescue Kyle and the other captives. There, he faces a prototype T-800 (played by Roland Kickinger with Arnold Schwarzenegger's digital face), which almost kills him. Marcus helps Connor fight the T-800, but the battle leaves Connor severely wounded in the heart. Marcus, Kyle, and Star manage to escape with the other captives, while Connor blows up the Skynet facility.
At the end of the film, The Resistance manages to temporarily stop Skynet's plans, but the war is not over. Connor, who needs a heart transplant to survive, accepts Marcus ' sacrifice.
