The Film is the second part of a trilogy Eastrail 177, which begins with Unbreakable (2000) and ends with Glass (2019). Story Split inspired by the true story of Billy Milligan, an American man diagnosed with Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) in the 1970s, who had 24 personalities. The Film follows a man with multiple personality disorder who kidnaps three teenage girls, creating a narrative full of suspense and mystery. This kidnapping was carried out by one of Kevin's personalities, Dennis, who has a perfectionist nature and is obsessive about cleanliness. All three girls are held captive in a mysterious underground facility, resembling a labyrinth with enclosed spaces. They begin to realize the strangeness of their captors because Kevin often changes behavior and clothes, as if becoming a different person every time he appears. Some of Kevin's prominent personalities include:
- Dennis: Rigid man with obsessive-compulsive disorder, which becomes the abduction brain.
- Patricia: Maternal woman with a cold look, manipulative.
- Hedwig: Nosy and innocent, but impressionable 9-year-old boy.
- Barry: Feminine men who are fond of fashion design, often become personalities who interact with psychiatrists.
- Jade, Orwell, Mr. Pritchard, and others, each of which has unique characteristics such as diabetics, historians or film professors.
The three personalities-Dennis, Patricia—and Hedwig-form a group called The Horde, who has a terrible plan to resurrect Kevin's 24th personality, called The Beast. The Beast described as a savage figure with extraordinary physical strength, believed by The Horde as a sacred entity. The purpose of kidnapping is to make the three girls as a sacrifice for The Beastclaimed to be cannibals.Meanwhile, Kevin is undergoing therapy with his psychiatrist, Dr. Karen Fletcher (Betty Buckley), yang berusaha memahami dan menyeimbangkan kepribadian-kepribadian Kevin. Dr. Fletcher suspects a dangerous new personality and begins investigating Kevin's strange actions. On the other hand, Casey, who has a dark past due to childhood abuse, uses her ingenuity to manipulate Kevin's personality, especially Hedwig's, in an attempt to save herself and her friends. The story switches between three main plots:
- Abduction and escape attempt: The three girls try to find a way out of the basement, facing Kevin's constantly changing personality.
- Kevin's Therapy Sessions: Kevin's interaction with Dr. Fletcher uncovers his DID background, which stems from childhood trauma resulting from his mother's torture.
- Casey's Past: Flashbacks show Casey's traumatic experiences, which shaped his antisocial yet intelligent character, as well as providing clues as to why he was able to survive the threat The Beast.
Tension increases when The Beast finally appears, showing terrible physical strength, including the ability to climb walls and be resistant to injuries. Claire and Marcia become victims, while Casey struggles to survive. In the climax, Casey discovers that The Beast it will not hurt those who are considered “pure " for having had a similar traumatic experience. Film Reviews Split
Advantages
- James McAvoy's Acting Appearance
James McAvoy delivers an outstanding performance as Kevin, with the ability to portray a variety of different personalities physically and emotionally. Her transition from the rigid Dennis, The Feminine Patricia, to the boyish Hedwig feels very natural and reassuring. Critics praised her acting as one of the best elements of the film, despite not earning an Oscar nomination. - A suspenseful narrative
Split managed to create a gripping atmosphere through did's realistic yet dramatic portrayal. The use of a cramped basement setting, combined with the uncertainty of which personality will emerge, adds to the psychological tension. The non-linear storyline, with its mix of kidnappings, therapy sessions, and Casey flashbacks, keeps the audience guessing. - Shyamalan's Signature Director
M. Night Shyamalan returned to his best form after several commercial failures (The Last Airbender, After Earth). Split demonstrates his skill in building suspense and unexpected twists, especially by linking this film to Unbreakable. - Casey's strong character
Anya Taylor-Joy stars as Casey, a girl with a traumatic past that sets her apart from the other two victims. Her clever use of Kevin's personality, especially Hedwig, adds dimension to her character. Flashbacks about his childhood provide emotional depth and thematic relevance to Kevin's trauma. - Deep psychological themes
The Film explores themes of trauma, defense mechanisms, and the impact of violence on a person's psychology. The portrayal of DID, though dramatized, provides insight into the complexity of this disorder, particularly through Dr. Fletcher.
Disadvantages
- Inconsistent Pacing
Some viewers felt the middle of the film was slow and lacked emotional tension. Unlike other thrillers like 10 Cloverfield Lane, Split failed to create a consistent climax towards the end. - Poorly developed supporting characters
Aside from Casey, Claire and Marcia's characters lack development, making it difficult for the audience to feel emotionally connected to them. This reduces the impact of tension from their fate. - Did filming controversy
The Film drew criticism from the mental health community for providing negative stereotypes about DID. Some experts, such as Dr. Michelle Stevens dan Dr. Garrett Marie Deckel, of the University of Texas at Austin, said the portrayal of Kevin as a dangerous criminal could exacerbate the stigma against people with DID. - Less supportive background music
Some critics have noted that the use of background music does not always match the atmosphere of suspense, sometimes feeling out of tune with scenes that would otherwise be tense. - Only part of the personality is shown
Although Kevin has 23 personalities, only nine are featured, with the main focus on Dennis, Patricia, Hedwig, and The Beast. This made some viewers feel the ambitious premise of 23 personalities was not fully explored.
Overall ValueSplit a powerful psychological thriller with stunning acting from James McAvoy and a suspense-filled narrative. Despite its flaws in pacing and supporting character development, the film manages to bring the unique premise of DID to life in an interesting and suspenseful way. Twist the connecting end into Unbreakable being one of the best surprises, it adds entertainment value to Shyamalan fans. Average scores from sites such as Rotten Tomatoes (77%) and IMDb (7.3/10) reflect positive reception from audiences and critics.
Compatibility with Children
Split not recommended for children under the age of 17 for the following reasons:
- Graphic violence and horrific content
The Film features scenes of intense violence, including brutal murders by The Beast (for example, a scene in which the bones of the victim are crushed) and a fairly explicit visualization of the wound. The scenes of abduction and confinement in the basement create an eerie atmosphere that can cause trauma to children or young adolescents. - Adult themes and Trauma
Split raising heavy themes such as child abuse, domestic violence, and mental health disorders. Casey's Flashback depicts sexual abuse by her uncle, which is shown implicitly but still disturbingly. These themes are too complex and sensitive for children to understand. - Elements Of Psychological Horror
Uncertainty about Kevin's emerging personality, especially The Beast with supernatural powers, creating an atmosphere of intense psychological horror. Children who are sensitive to tension or scary scenes may feel disturbed. - Inappropriate language and dialogue
While there is no explicit abusive language, some of the dialogue and interactions (especially from Kevin's Dennis-like personality) contain a threatening tone that is not appropriate for children. - Rating and Age guide
Split rated PG-13 in the United States, but recommended for ages 17+ due to its heavy content. Parents should take into account the emotional readiness of their child, even for adolescents over 17 years old, since the theme of abuse and violence can provoke a negative reaction.
Recommendations for Parents
- For children under 13 years old: Strongly discouraged as violent content, horror, and themes of abuse can cause fear or trauma.
- For Teenagers 13-16 Years: Not recommended except with close parental supervision. If parents decide to allow, first discuss DID and trauma themes to help them understand the context.
- For teenagers 17 years and older: Maybe it can be watched by teenagers who are emotionally mature and like the thriller/horror genre, but still with parental guidance to discuss mental health issues and did stereotypes.
- Alternatives for childrenChoose a family movie or a light thriller like Zootopia or The Incredibles its more friendly for kids and young teens.
Notes for a young audience
If parents or teens are interested in watching Split out of interest in the theme of psychology, be sure to accompany them with a discussion of:
- The reality of DID and how the film dramatizes the condition.
- The impact of childhood trauma and the importance of mental health.
- The importance of not stigmatizing mental health disorders based on fictitious depictions in films.
