A Thousand day
This film highlights horror elements typical of Javanese culture, such as black magic, mystical rituals, and weton (special birth day, Friday Kliwon), with a tense atmosphere that is reinforced by neat cinematography and visual effects. Even though it relies on jump scares and some gore elements, the story also explores themes of sacrifice, revenge and mystical bonds.
-
Content and Themes: This film contains intense horror elements, including possession scenes, jump scares, and gore elements (although more restrained than Kimo Stamboel's other works). Themes of black magic, mystical rituals, and death may be too frightening or confusing for children under 13. The visuals of Della in possession, with her pale body and festering wounds, and the dark hut setting, may trigger fear or nightmares in young children.
- Language and Culture: This film uses mixed Indonesian and Javanese dialogue, with strong Javanese cultural elements (for example, weton and ritual). Children may find it difficult to understand the cultural context or certain dialogue without additional explanation, especially if they are not familiar with Javanese traditions.
-
Age Appropriateness: According to reviews “ "Sewu Dino “is considered” soft “for the horror category and is suitable for a teenage audience because the story is less complicated and more intriguing than creepy like”KKN di Desa Penari". For teenagers 13-15 years old, this film can be enjoyed as a light horror introduction with parental guidance, especially to discuss cultural elements or emotional impact. However, for children under 10-12 years old, the film is less suitable due to the potential for fear and heavy mystical themes.
- Moral Message: The story touches on the themes of sacrifice (Sri helps her father) and the consequences of revenge (witchcraft war between families). This can be a positive discussion point for teens, but younger kids may not get the message and just focus on the horror aspect.
- For Children <12 Years: Not recommended because the horror scenes, jump scares and mystical themes can be too scary or difficult to understand.
- For Teenagers 13-15 Years: Can be watched with parental guidance to help explain cultural context and manage emotional impact. Make sure your child is comfortable with the horror genre.
- Note to Parents: If your child is sensitive to horror or has a fear of mystical things, it's best to avoid it. Watch it first to assess suitability for your child's emotional readiness.

Complete Synopsis Of The Film A Thousand day (2023)
The story centers on Sri Rahayu, a young woman from a village in East Java in 2003, who lives in poverty. Sri only lives with her father who is seriously ill and requires large medical expenses. To make ends meet, Sri works as a waitress at Yu Minah's stall, but her income is far from enough. Driven by an urgent need, Sri decides to find a higher-paying job. One day, Yu Minah gave a job vacancy flyer from the Atmojo family that offered a fantastic salary of IDR 10 million per month, far above the salary of a typical household assistant. Although doubtful because she did not have a diploma, Sri nekat applied.
Sri, Erna, and Dini are taken to a Hidden Hut in the middle of the forest, far away from civilization. There, they meet Mbah Tamin, a shaman who works for the Atmojo family. Mbah Tamin introduces their duties: caring for and bathing Dela Atmojo, grandson of Mbah Karsa Atmojo, who is in a coma due to witchcraft curse A Thousand day (Thousand Days). Dela's condition was terrible—her body was thin, pale, full of festering wounds, and her stomach grew like a pregnant person, although she looked like a living corpse. Dela was locked in a yellow bamboo coffin, and the hut was mystically fenced off to prevent the evil spirit that possessed him, named Sengarturih, from escaping.
Day after day, the tension increases. During the ritual Wash Sedo, Dela sometimes shows strange signs, such as suddenly opening his eyes, laughing creepily, or talking in a voice not his own. One night, Sri made a fatal mistake: he forgot to tie Dela's hands while bathing. Dela suddenly got up, glared, and said that Sri, Erna, and Dini would have the same fate as him if he had stayed. This incident frightened Sri and Erna, while Dini tried to calm them down, although she herself seemed to be keeping a secret.
The story then reveals the background A Thousand day: this curse is part of a witchcraft war between the Atmojo family and the Kuncoro family, two prominent families in East Java who are feuding for power and honor. Witchcraft A Thousand day deliberately sent by the Kuncoro family to finish off the descendants of Atmojo, with Dela as the last target. However, the Atmojo family also has a dark secret: they engage in the practice of black magic to maintain wealth and power, which fuels the Kuncoro family's grudge.
