A Thousand day

“Sewu Dino” is a 2023 Indonesian horror film directed by Kimo Stamboel, adapted from a viral story by SimpleMan on Twitter. This film tells the story of Sri Rahayu (Mikha Tambayong), a simple woman from a village in East Java who needs money for treatment for her sick father. He accepts a high-paying job offer from the Atmodjo family to care for Della Atmodjo (Gisellma Firmansyah), the granddaughter of Mbah Karsa Atmodjo, who is stricken by the "Sewu Dino" witchcraft curse (meaning "A Thousand Days" in Javanese).
Sri, along with two other women, Erna (Givina Lukita Dewi) and Dini (Agla Artalidia), were assigned to carry out the "Basuh Sedo" bathing ritual to appease the evil spirit named Sengarturih who was possessing Della. They are placed in a remote hut in the middle of the forest, which is mystically fenced off so they cannot escape. This ritual must be carried out until the 1000th day to free Della from the curse, but failure could have fatal consequences for their lives. The story develops with mystical terror, betrayal, and conflict between two families involved in a witchcraft war, revealing the dark secret behind the curse.

This film highlights horror elements typical of Javanese culture, such as black magic, mystical rituals, and weton (special birth day, Friday Kliwon), with a tense atmosphere that is reinforced by neat cinematography and visual effects. Even though it relies on jump scares and some gore elements, the story also explores themes of sacrifice, revenge and mystical bonds.

Compatibility with Children
“Sewu Dino” has an age rating of 13+ in Indonesia, which means it is aimed at teenagers and adults. The following is an analysis of its suitability for children:
  • Content and Themes: This film contains intense horror elements, including possession scenes, jump scares, and gore elements (although more restrained than Kimo Stamboel's other works). Themes of black magic, mystical rituals, and death may be too frightening or confusing for children under 13. The visuals of Della in possession, with her pale body and festering wounds, and the dark hut setting, may trigger fear or nightmares in young children.

  • Language and Culture: This film uses mixed Indonesian and Javanese dialogue, with strong Javanese cultural elements (for example, weton and ritual). Children may find it difficult to understand the cultural context or certain dialogue without additional explanation, especially if they are not familiar with Javanese traditions.
  • Age Appropriateness: According to reviews “ "Sewu Dino “is considered” soft “for the horror category and is suitable for a teenage audience because the story is less complicated and more intriguing than creepy like”KKN di Desa Penari". For teenagers 13-15 years old, this film can be enjoyed as a light horror introduction with parental guidance, especially to discuss cultural elements or emotional impact. However, for children under 10-12 years old, the film is less suitable due to the potential for fear and heavy mystical themes.

  • Moral Message: The story touches on the themes of sacrifice (Sri helps her father) and the consequences of revenge (witchcraft war between families). This can be a positive discussion point for teens, but younger kids may not get the message and just focus on the horror aspect.
Recommendation:
  • For Children <12 Years: Not recommended because the horror scenes, jump scares and mystical themes can be too scary or difficult to understand.
  • For Teenagers 13-15 Years: Can be watched with parental guidance to help explain cultural context and manage emotional impact. Make sure your child is comfortable with the horror genre.
  • Note to Parents: If your child is sensitive to horror or has a fear of mystical things, it's best to avoid it. Watch it first to assess suitability for your child's emotional readiness.

Set in a thick Javanese culture with mystical nuances, this film tells the terror of witchcraft A Thousand day, a terrible curse that lasts for a thousand days, with lives at stake. Here is the complete synopsis:

The beginning of the story: Sri Lanka and economic difficulties
The story centers on Sri Rahayu, a young woman from a village in East Java in 2003, who lives in poverty. Sri only lives with her father who is seriously ill and requires large medical expenses. To make ends meet, Sri works as a waitress at Yu Minah's stall, but her income is far from enough. Driven by an urgent need, Sri decides to find a higher-paying job. One day, Yu Minah gave a job vacancy flyer from the Atmojo family that offered a fantastic salary of IDR 10 million per month, far above the salary of a typical household assistant. Although doubtful because she did not have a diploma, Sri nekat applied.
Sri attended the selection process at a labor distribution agency. At first, he felt discouraged to see many other, more qualified applicants. However, luck seemed to be on his side. The owner of the agency, who later became known as a representative of the Atmojo family, seemed intrigued when he learned that Sri was born on Friday Kliwon, a day considered sacred in Javanese culture. Without much question, Sri was accepted to work, along with two other women, Erna and Dini, who also turned out to be born on Friday Kliwon. The three are then picked up by Sugik, the driver of the Atmojo family, and taken to a mysterious location.

Mystical tasks in a secluded hut
Sri, Erna, and Dini are taken to a Hidden Hut in the middle of the forest, far away from civilization. There, they meet Mbah Tamin, a shaman who works for the Atmojo family. Mbah Tamin introduces their duties: caring for and bathing Dela Atmojo, grandson of Mbah Karsa Atmojo, who is in a coma due to witchcraft curse A Thousand day (Thousand Days). Dela's condition was terrible—her body was thin, pale, full of festering wounds, and her stomach grew like a pregnant person, although she looked like a living corpse. Dela was locked in a yellow bamboo coffin, and the hut was mystically fenced off to prevent the evil spirit that possessed him, named Sengarturih, from escaping.
Mbah Tamin explained that A Thousand day is a very cruel ancient witchcraft, designed to finish off all members of the target family in a thousand days. This witchcraft has killed almost the entire Atmojo family, and Dela is the last survivor. To calm Sengarturih, the three women had to perform a ritual Wash Sedo (bathing the corpse) every day by following the instructions of Mbah Karsa Atmojo's voice recording. The Ritual involves watering the flowers and tying Dela's hands and feet with black rope to prevent evil spirits from taking over. However, Wash Sedo just a temporary solution. The only way to break the curse was to complete a special ritual on the 1000th day, by which time there were already four days left (996th day).
Dini, who already had experience working for the Atmojo family, led the rituals and taught Sri and Erna. However, Sri soon felt a gripping aura in the hut. A stench, a dark atmosphere, and strange whispers began to haunt them. Mbah Tamin warns that they should not leave the hut before the task is completed, because the mystical fence will kill anyone who tries to escape.

Mystical terror and betrayal
Day after day, the tension increases. During the ritual Wash Sedo, Dela sometimes shows strange signs, such as suddenly opening his eyes, laughing creepily, or talking in a voice not his own. One night, Sri made a fatal mistake: he forgot to tie Dela's hands while bathing. Dela suddenly got up, glared, and said that Sri, Erna, and Dini would have the same fate as him if he had stayed. This incident frightened Sri and Erna, while Dini tried to calm them down, although she herself seemed to be keeping a secret.
Tensions peak when Sri discovers a shocking fact: they were all recruited not only to care for Dela, but also as part of a mystical pact. Atmojo's family deliberately chose them because of their birth on Friday Kliwon, which is considered to have a special energy to hold Sengarturih. More horrifically, Sri realizes that they are “sacrifices " to save Dela. If the ritual on the 1000th day fails, their lives will be at stake.
In the midst of terror, internal conflicts arise. Erna, who turns out to have ulterior motives, is known to be a spy from the Kuncoro family, sworn enemies of the Atmojo family. In the novel and the original thread, Erna attempted to kill Sri by manipulating Sengarturih, although this subplot was omitted in the film adaptation. Meanwhile, Dini begins to show signs of trauma from her previous experience, making Sri even more suspicious that there is a big secret the Atmojo family is hiding.

Witchcraft war and climax on the 1000th day
The story then reveals the background A Thousand day: this curse is part of a witchcraft war between the Atmojo family and the Kuncoro family, two prominent families in East Java who are feuding for power and honor. Witchcraft A Thousand day deliberately sent by the Kuncoro family to finish off the descendants of Atmojo, with Dela as the last target. However, the Atmojo family also has a dark secret: they engage in the practice of black magic to maintain wealth and power, which fuels the Kuncoro family's grudge.
On the 1000th day, tensions reached a peak. Sri, who now understands that her life is in danger, tries to fight fate. Together with Erna and Dini (albeit with internal conflict), they face the increasingly powerful terror of Sengarturih. The final Ritual involves a direct confrontation with the evil spirit, with the help of Mbah Tamin and instructions from Mbah Karsa. In the process, Sri meets Sabdo Kuncoro, a member of the Kuncoro family who has a key role in this curse. The climactic scene features a suspenseful, mystical fight, with elements of Kimo Stamboel's signature gore, though some viewers felt the film version was less creepy than the novel.

Without revealing the full spoiler, the end of the story A Thousand day leaving several questions open, especially regarding the fate of Sri, Erna, Dini, and the Atmojo family.
