Complete Synopsis Saving Private Ryan
Saving Private Ryan (1998), directed by Steven Spielberg, is a war epic film depicting the Allied landings in Normandy during World War II and the sacrificial rescue missions. Here's the complete synopsis:
Background and opening
The Film begins with an elderly veteran visiting an American military cemetery in Normandy, France, with his family. He knelt in front of a tomb, and the story moved to the past, precisely June 6, 1944, the day of D-Day, during the Allied landing on Omaha Beach.
Landing at Omaha Beach
Captain John H. Miller (Tom Hanks), a U.S. Army Ranger officer, leads his men in the invasion of Normandy. The opening scene features a brutal battle on Omaha Beach, where Allied forces encounter machine gun fire, artillery, and deadly booby traps from German forces. With realistic and intense visuals, Miller leads his troops through the chaos, losing many lives, until finally managing to secure the beach.
Rescue Mission
After the battle, Miller received orders from his superior, General George C. Marshall, to lead a special mission. The War Department learned that three of the Ryan family's four brothers had died in combat: two in Normandy and one in the Pacific. To prevent their mother from losing all her children, Marshall orders that the last child, Corporal James Francis Ryan (Matt Damon), a member of the 101st Airborne Division, be found and safely returned home.
Miller memilih tujuh prajurit untuk misi ini: Sersan Mike Horvath (Tom Sizemore), Kopral Richard Reiben (Edward Burns), Kopral Timothy Upham (Jeremy Davies), Prajurit Daniel Jackson (Barry Pepper), Prajurit Stanley Mellish (Adam Goldberg), Prajurit Adrian Caparzo (Vin Diesel), dan petugas medis Irwin Wade (Giovanni Ribisi). They are a diverse team, with internal dynamics and conflicts, but united by their tasks.
A Journey Full Of Dangers
Miller's team moves across the war-torn French countryside, encountering various obstacles. They encountered other allied forces, faced German ambushes, and witnessed the devastation of the war. In one of the incidents, Caparzo was killed while trying to save a small child, highlighting a moral dilemma in the war. Wade, the medic, was also killed in the ensuing attack, raising tensions among the team members.
Along the way, the team begins to question the value of the mission. Reiben, the most vocal, felt this mission was not worth their lives, considering that they were only looking for one person in the midst of thousands of dead soldiers. Miller, while trying to remain steadfast, also shows his human side, revealing that he was a schoolteacher before the war, trying to maintain his sanity in the midst of cruelty.
Ryan's discovery and the final battle
After going through various skirmishes and losing team members, Miller finally finds James Ryan in the small town of Ramelle, where Ryan and the rest of his paratroopers defend a strategic bridge. However, Ryan refused to abandon his comrades, feeling that his duty was to defend the bridge until reinforcements arrived. Miller, although initially eager to get Ryan home immediately, decided to help Ryan and his troops hold the position.
The final battle at Ramelle is the highlight of the film. The small Allied Force faced a massive attack from German troops equipped with tanks and infantry. With limited resources, Miller and his men use clever strategies, such as fuel traps and molotov cocktails, to slow down the enemy. One by one, however, the team members fall: Jackson is killed by a sniper, Mellish dies in hand-to-hand combat, and Horvath is mortally wounded. Miller himself was fatally wounded defending the bridge.
At a critical moment, allied reinforcements arrived, including fighter planes that destroyed German tanks. Ryan survived, but Miller, before dying, whispered to Ryan, “James, earn this... earn it,” asking him to live a life worthy of their sacrifice.
Closing
Returning to the present, it is revealed that the old veteran at the beginning of the film is James Ryan. He stood in front of Captain Miller's grave, contemplating the sacrifices that had been made for him. Tearfully, he asked his wife if she had lived a good life, trying to fulfill Miller's message. The Film closes with an American flag flying at the funeral, honoring the fallen heroes.
