Full Synopsis Of Pengabdi Setan 2: Communion
Background Story
Servant Of Satan 2: Communion is a sequel of Indonesian horror film Satan's Servant (2017), directed by Joko Anwar. The Film was released on August 4, 2022 and continues The Story of the Suwono family who survived the supernatural terror in the first film. This time, the story is set in an old flat in North Jakarta in the 1980s, offering a more gripping horror feel with a duration of 119 minutes. The Film stars Tara Basro, Bront Palarae, Endy Arfian, Nasar Anuz and others, presenting a new terror related to the mysterious cult and the terrifying figure of the “mother”.
Storyline
The story begins with a flashback to 1955, featuring Budiman Syailendra, a journalist investigating a mysterious case in a village. He finds bodies that appear to have come back to life, hinting at the presence of dark forces. Back in 1984, the focus shifts to the Suwono family—Rini (Tara Basro), Bapak (Bront Palarae), Tony (Endy Arfian), and Bondi (Nasar Anuz)—who move into an apartment in North Jakarta after losing their mother in the horrific events of the first film. They hoped that the crowded flats would provide a sense of security, but instead, they were trapped in an even more sinister mystical darkness.
The flats keep a dark secret. Rini and her family began to experience strange events, including the appearance of a “mother” who continues to haunt. Along the way, they meet other residents such as Tari (Queen Felisha), her son Ian, and a group of mysterious characters who seem to harbor ulterior motives. A resident named Darminah reveals that the flats are linked to a heretical sect that performs gruesome rituals to summon evil forces.
Tensions rose when a major storm hit, cutting access out of the flats. Rini, trying to protect her younger siblings, finds clues in her father's suitcase that lead to their family's secret past. As it turns out, these flats are the center of operations of a sect that wants to revive an evil entity through the sacrifice of life. One of the tragic events involved Tari, whose death prompted questions about the motives of the sect.
At the top of the story, Rini managed to open the father's suitcase and find documents that reveal their family's relationship with the sect. The terror reaches a climax when the residents of the flats, most of whom are members of a sect, perform a final ritual. Rini, Tony, and Bondi struggle to survive, facing supernatural beings and betrayal from those they trust. The Film closes with an ambiguous ending, leaving clues about the continuation of the terror and the fate of the Suwono family.
Horror themes and elements
Servant Of Satan 2: Communion combines elements of psychological and supernatural horror, focusing on family trauma, betrayal and invisible evil forces. The flats become horror rides that are explored to the fullest, with dark alleys, old elevators and strange noises that create an eerie atmosphere. Joko Anwar uses religious and cultural symbolism to reinforce the narrative, making the film not only frightening but also rich in meaning.
Reception and important notes
The Film was praised for its intensity of terror that surpassed that of the first film, although some viewers found the first half a bit slow. The flat's exploration and slick cinematography make it one of Indonesia's most ambitious horror films. However, the open ending sparked speculation and theories about the continuation of the story, as discussed on various social media platforms.
