Background Story
"Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom" is a direct sequel to "Jurassic World" (2015) and is the fifth installment in the Jurassic Park franchise. The film is set three years after the destruction of the Jurassic World theme park on Isla Nublar due to dinosaur escapes and security system failures. The island is now abandoned by humans, and the remaining dinosaurs live wild in the jungle of the island. However, a new threat arises when the volcano on Isla Nublar, Mount Sibo, begins to reactivate, threatening the survival of all dinosaur species on the island.
Storyline
Part 1: The Crisis on Isla Nublar
The story begins with a world divided over the fate of dinosaurs on Isla Nublar. Part of the party, including activist and former Jurassic World Operations Manager Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard), is fighting to save the dinosaurs from extinction due to a volcanic eruption. Claire mendirikan Dinosaur Protection Group (DPG) untuk mengadvokasi penyelamatan dinosaurus. Meanwhile, the US government is hesitant to spend huge funds to save creatures that are considered dangerous.
Claire dihubungi oleh Benjamin Lockwood (James Cromwell), seorang filantropis kaya dan mantan mitra John Hammond, pendiri Jurassic Park. Lockwood, who is ill, wants to save the dinosaurs by moving them to a secure sanctuary on a private island without human intervention. For this mission, Claire recruits Owen Grady (Chris Pratt), a former velociraptor trainer who now lives alone. Owen is initially reluctant, but agrees to join forces in order to save Blue, a velociraptor he trained as a child and has an emotional bond with.
With a small team that includes Zia Rodriguez (Daniella Pineda), a dinosaur veterinarian, and Franklin Webb (Justice Smith), an IT specialist, Claire and Owen return to Isla Nublar. They team up with a team of mercenaries led by Ken Wheatley (Ted Levine), sent by Lockwood's assistant, Eli Mills (Rafe Spall).
Part 2: betrayal and Rescue
On Isla Nublar, the team faces a variety of challenges, including the onslaught of wild dinosaurs such as T-Rex and the threat of an imminent volcanic eruption. Owen manages to find Blue, but the rescue mission turns out to be harboring a hidden agenda. Eli Mills, who controls the operation, secretly plans to capture dinosaurs not for rescue, but for sale to wealthy parties on the black market. Mills teams up with Gunnar Eversol (Toby Jones), an auctioneer holding a dinosaur auction at the Lockwood estate in Northern California.
When the volcano erupts, Claire, Owen, and the team are trapped on the island. They are nearly killed, but manage to escape with several captured dinosaurs, including Blue, using a cargo ship. On the ship, Claire and Owen realize Mills ' betrayal and learn that the dinosaurs will be auctioned. Meanwhile, Zia and Franklin, who are also captured, try to find a way to stop Mills ' plan.
Part 3: confrontation at the Lockwood Estate
The story moves to the Lockwood estate, where dinosaurs are kept in underground cages. Here, the audience is introduced to Maisie Lockwood (Isabella Sermon), Benjamin Lockwood's granddaughter who is curious about suspicious activity in her home. Maisie accidentally discovers Mills ' plan and learns a dark secret about her own origins: she is a human clone created using the same genetic technology as dinosaurs.
Meanwhile, Mills introduces Indoraptor, a new hybrid created from the DNA of Indominus Rex and velociraptor. Indoraptor is a biological weapon designed to be the perfect killer, smarter and fiercer than other dinosaurs. Mills plans to sell the Indoraptor at a high price at auction.
Claire and Owen, who managed to escape from custody, team up with Maisie to stop the auction and free the dinosaurs. They face various threats, including an Indoraptor that escapes from its cage. In the film's climax, Lockwood is killed by Mills upon learning of his betrayal, and the dinosaurs narrowly escape death as a result of a toxic gas leak in an underground cage. Claire is faced with a moral dilemma: whether she should free the dinosaurs to the American mainland, which are a potential danger to humans, or let them die. With Maisie's help, the dinosaurs are finally freed, allowing them to spread to the outside world.
Part 4: conclusion and consequences
The Film closes with a drastically changed world. Dinosaurs are now coexisting with humans in different parts of the world, creating new challenges for ecosystem balance and Community Security. Dr. Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum), who appears in a government hearing at the beginning of the film, gives a monologue about how humans must adapt to this new reality, in which they are no longer the sole dominant species. Blue, who survived the chaos, is seen in the wild, signaling that the dinosaurs will continue to survive.
Main Themes
- Ethics Genetics: The Film explores the consequences of genetic manipulation, both on dinosaurs and humans, through the creation of Indoraptor and the revelation of Maisie's origins.
- Balance of nature vs. Human Intervention: The story depicts the conflict between letting nature take its course (extinction of the dinosaurs) or human intervention to save the species.
- Greed and exploitation: Mills ' betrayal reflects how greed can abuse scientific progress for personal gain.
- Human-Animal Relationship: The bond between Owen and Blue highlights the possibility of empathy and understanding across species.
Main Characters
- Owen Grady (Chris Pratt): A charismatic dinosaur trainer who seeks to save Blue and stop the exploitation of dinosaurs.
- Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard): Activist dedicated to saving dinosaurs, transformed from corporate manager to environmental warrior.
- Maisie Lockwood (Isabella Sermon): The young girl who plays a key role in the story, with a big secret about her identity.
- Eli Mills (Rafe Spall): The main antagonist who appears to be an ally but has an evil agenda.
- Dr. Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum): Chaos theorist mathematician who provides a philosophical perspective on the dinosaur crisis.
Visual and cinematographic elements
Directed by J.A. Bayona, the film has a darker, gothic feel than its predecessor, with tense scenes such as an escape from a volcanic eruption and a confrontation with an Indoraptor on the Lockwood estate. The use of visual effects for dinosaurs, in particular Indoraptor, is very detailed, creating an eerie atmosphere. Michael Giacchino's music retains iconic elements of the John Williams theme while adding a more emotional tone.
Reception and impact
"Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom" grossed more than $1.3 billion at the global box office, despite mixed reviews from critics. Some praised the action and visuals, but others criticized the storyline as lacking coherence and relying too heavily on nostalgia. The Film successfully set the stage for its sequel, “Jurassic World: Dominion” (2022), by introducing the concept of dinosaurs living among humans.
Conclusion
“Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” is a mix of action, adventure and moral drama that takes the Jurassic Park franchise in a new direction. By combining elements of science fiction, thriller, and social commentary on the ethics of Science, the film offers an entertaining yet thought-provoking experience. The decision to free the dinosaurs into the human world becomes an important turning point, opening a new chapter in this epic saga.
