Background Story

The story centers on Merida, a young princess of the DunBroch clan in Scotland. Merida is an accomplished Archer who is free-spirited, passionate, and dislikes the strict rules of the kingdom. She was the daughter of King Fergus, a valiant clan leader, and Queen Elinor, an elegant woman who held tradition in high esteem. Fergus was known as a legendary bear hunter after he lost his legs to a giant bear named Mor'du. Meanwhile, Elinor seeks to educate Merida to be a well-mannered princess and ready for marriage according to the traditions of the clan.

The main conflict arises when Elinor announces that Merida must be betrothed to one of the princes of the three allied clans: Macintosh, MacGuffin, and Dingwall. This tradition aims to maintain peace between clans. However, Merida, who wants to freely determine her life, strongly rejects this idea of arranged marriage, causing tension with her mother.

Conflict and resolution

Merida's journey to save her mother becomes an inner and physical struggle. He learns to understand the perspective of Elinor, who, although rigid, wants only the best for her son and the kingdom. Meanwhile, Elinor in the form of a bear begins to show her Wilder but still loving side, deepening their bond. Merida must also protect her mother from Fergus and the soldiers who hunt “bears” in the forest, as well as face the threat of Mor'du, who turns out to have links to the curse.

The climax of the story occurs when Merida and Elinor face off against Mor'du in a fierce battle. Merida manages to protect her mother, and Mor'du is eventually defeated, revealing that he is an ancient Prince cursed for his greed. To break the curse, Merida repaired the rug she had torn as a symbol of restored family ties, and emotionally expressed her love and regret for her mother.
