He intends to kill Chill as revenge, but his plans are thwarted when Chill is killed by a hitman working for mob boss Carmine Falcone. Feeling empty, Bruce meets Rachel Dawes (Katie Holmes), his childhood friend who now works as an assistant district attorney. Rachel denounces Bruce's desire for revenge, prompting him to seek a greater purpose. Frustrated with rampant corruption in Gotham and disoriented, Bruce chooses to leave the city and travel around the world.
In Asia, Bruce lives as a tramp, learning to survive and understand the criminal world from the inside. He is eventually arrested and imprisoned in Bhutan, where he meets Henri Ducard (Liam Neeson), a mysterious man who offers him a way out. Ducard mengajak Bruce bergabung dengan League of Shadows, organisasi rahasia yang dipimpin oleh Ra’s al Ghul (Ken Watanabe). Under Ducard's guidance, Bruce is trained in martial arts, stealth, and strategy, as well as taught to deal with his deepest fears. He learned to use his bat phobia as a strength. However, when the League of Shadows unveils their plan to destroy Gotham—which they consider corrupt beyond saving—Bruce rejects their extreme ideology. In a dramatic confrontation, Bruce destroys the League headquarters and seemingly kills Ra's al Ghul, but saves Ducard.

Batman manages to capture Falcone, but a new threat appears in the form of Dr. Jonathan Crane, alias Scarecrow (Cillian Murphy), seorang psikiater korup yang bekerja untuk pihak misterius. Crane uses fear gas-a chemical weapon that triggers terrifying hallucinations-to control his enemies and destroy patients at Arkham Asylum.

Ducard uncovers the League of Shadows ' plan to destroy Gotham by spreading fear gas through the city's water system, which will be activated by a stolen microwave weapon from Wayne Enterprises. This plan is aimed at triggering mass chaos, making Gotham residents destroy each other in a panic.
Meanwhile, Bruce struggles to balance his identity as a reckless billionaire playboy in public and Batman at night. His relationship with Rachel is further complicated because he cannot reveal his true identity. On the night of his birthday, Ducard shows up at Wayne Manor and threatens to set the house on fire. Bruce, with the help of Alfred, survives the fire, but the city begins to fall into chaos when fear gas is released.
Climax and completion
Batman teams up with Gordon to stop the League of Shadows ' plans. In a fierce battle on a monorail train carrying microwave weapons, Batman confronts Ducard. With the help of Gordon, who destroys the train tracks, Batman manages to thwart the plan. He left Ducard on a crashed train, which led to the death of the mentor. Batman also saves Rachel from the effects of the fear gas and eventually reveals his identity to her, though their relationship remains hindered by his mission as Batman.
At the end of the story, Gotham begins to recover, and Batman becomes a symbol of hope as well as fear. Rachel chooses to keep her distance from Bruce, realizing that he has turned into something bigger than himself.
