Background

Muzan Kibutsuji is the main antagonist in Kimetsu no Yaiba. He was the first Devil in the world, as well as the creator of all other demons. Muzan was born in the Heian era (about 1,000 years before the main story) as a weak-bodied human suffering from a chronic illness. Due to her fragile condition, a doctor tried to cure her with an experimental drug made from blue spider lilies (Blue Spider Lily). However, this drug actually turned him into a demon with incredible power, although he lost the ability to survive in the sun. Since then, Muzan has become a power-hungry, manipulative and cruel creature, with the main goal of finding a way to survive the sunlight and achieve true immortality.

Physical Appearance

Muzan is a character who has the ability to change his form, so he often appears in various appearances to disguise his identity. However, here are the main looks:

  1. Primary Form (Adult Male):
    • Hair: Black, wavy, and shoulder length.
    • Eyes: Fiery red with cat-like pupils, giving the impression of being creepy and full of authority.
    • Skin: Pale, almost porcelain, reflecting his demonic nature.
    • Clothing: Usually wears a Western-style formal suit, such as a black coat with white accents, a fedora hat, and a tie, reflecting aristocratic style. This appearance gives the impression of elegant but creepy.
    • Expression: Cold, full of confidence, and often shows an expression of disdain or anger when his plans are disrupted.
  2. Other Existences:
    • Women: Muzan once disguised himself as a beautiful woman with long hair and traditional Japanese clothing to avoid detection.
    • Little Boy: On several occasions, he turns into a child with an innocent face to manipulate those around him.
    • There's A Real Devil: In the final fight, his body transforms into a monstrous form with spiked arms and tentacles, a huge mouth on his body, and even more monstrous skin, showing his true strength.

His transformation ability makes him difficult to track down by The Demon Hunter Corps (Demon Slayer Corps).

Personality

Muzan is a very complex character, yet dominated by negative traits that make him one of the most iconic antagonists in anime:

  • Narcissistic and selfish: Muzan considers himself a perfect being, almost like a God. He cannot accept defeat or imperfection, neither from himself nor from his subordinates.
  • Manipulative: He is very good at manipulating others, both humans and demons, to achieve his goals. He often disguises himself and takes advantage of the emotional weaknesses of others.
  • Cruel and merciless: Muzan does not hesitate to kill anyone, including his own men (twelve Kizuki), if they fail or disappoint him. It also kills people indiscriminately.
  • Paranoid and perfectionist: Although very powerful, Muzan is always wary of threats, especially from The Demon Hunter Corps and Nichirin Blades. His fear of death and sunlight prompted him to constantly search for blue spider lilies.
  • Smart and strategic: Muzan is the mastermind behind many events in the story. He is able to plan a long-term strategy and uses the Twelve Kizuki as tools to protect himself.

However, behind these traits, Muzan also showed a tragic side. His fear of death stems from his childhood experiences as a weak human, making him obsessed with immortality. Even so, his violent nature makes it difficult to gain sympathy from readers or viewers.

Powers and abilities

As The Demon King, Muzan has powers that far surpass those of other demons, making him an almost invincible enemy:

  1. Physical strength and regeneration:
    • Muzan has tremendous physical strength, is able to destroy an opponent with one blow.
    • His regeneration ability was almost instant, even when his body was destroyed. He can reconstitute his body even if his head is cut off, something that is usually deadly to other demons.
  2. Biological Manipulation:
    • Muzan can transform his own body, creating tentacles, additional mouths, or even transform his form into another human.
    • He can also manipulate the bodies of other demons, such as instilling a curse that allows him to kill them remotely if they say his name.
  3. Demon Blood:
    • Muzan's blood is very strong and poisonous to humans. It can turn humans into demons by injecting its blood, but few can survive this process.
    • He could also increase the power of other demons by giving more of his blood, as was done to the Twelve Kizuki.
  4. Mental Strength:
    • Muzan has the ability to read the minds of his subordinates through blood connections, allowing him complete control over them.
    • It can also emit a very frightening aura, making opponents feel scared or paralyzed just by its presence.
  5. Blood Demon Art:
    • In the last fight, Muzan showed Blood Demon Art in the form of an attack of poisonous energy and spiny tentacles capable of destroying anything around.
    • It can also create deadly shock waves from its body.
  6. Disadvantages:
    • SunlightTip: the only major drawback of Muzan is the sun's rays, which will burn and destroy it.
    • Tamayo Medicine: A drug created by Tamayo, a demon who hates Muzan, weakens his regeneration and accelerates the aging of his body during the final fight.
    • Nichirin Blades: Although he is very resistant to Nichirin's sword, a precise attack from a powerful demon hunter can still hurt him.

Relationships with other characters

  1. Twelve Kizuki: Muzan is the creator and leader of the Twelve Kizuki, the strongest group of demons loyal to him. However, he does not value them as individuals and often kills them if they fail. Akaza, Doma, and Kokushibo are some of the strongest Kizuki working for him.
  2. The Demon Hunter Corps: Muzan is the main enemy of the corps, especially after he massacred Tanjiro Kamado's family and turned Nezuko into a demon. He hates the Ubuyashiki family because they have led the resistance against him for centuries.
  3. Tamayo and Yushiro: Tamayo, a demon who rebelled against Muzan, poses a great threat to him due to his knowledge of demon biology. Muzan hated Tamayo because he refused to submit to him.
  4. Tanjiro Kamado: Muzan has a special relationship with Tanjiro as he sees similarities between Tanjiro and Yoriichi Tsugikuni, the legendary demon hunter who almost killed him in the past. Muzan is also responsible for Tanjiro's family tragedy, making him Tanjiro's personal enemy.

Role in the story

Muzan is the mastermind behind almost all conflicts in Kimetsu no Yaiba. He is responsible for the creation of demons, including Nezuko, and the deaths of many important characters. The ultimate goal is to find a blue spider lily or someone who can survive in the sun (like Nezuko) to achieve true immortality.

In the story, Muzan often operates from the shadows, using the Twelve Kizuki to carry out his plans while avoiding direct confrontation with the Demon Hunter Corps. However, when he was finally cornered in Infinity Castle Arc and Sunrise Countdown Arc, it shows its full power in an epic fight against Tanjiro and the Hashiras.
