Biography
Tomohisa Yamashita, often called Yamapi or Tomo, is a famous Japanese singer, actor, and television host. He was born on April 9, 1985 in Funabashi, Chiba, Japan, with the birth name Tomohisa Aoki. After his parents divorced, he was raised by his mother, Naomi, with his younger sister, Rina, and adopted his mother's surname, Yamashita. Since childhood, he showed athletic talent and had time to study karate until he reached the purple belt. At the age of 11, he joined the Johnny & Associates agency in 1996, inspired by a drama starring Hideaki Takizawa and his desire to appear on television.
Yamashita's career began with his acting debut in 1998 in the NHK drama Shonentachi. She then debuted as a singer in 2004 as a member of the idol group NEWS. Her solo career began in 2006 with the single “Daite Senorita”. His name became widely known after starring in the drama Nobuta Wo Produce (2005) as Kusano Akira, followed by his first leading role in Kurosagi (2006), which was later adapted into a film in 2008. In October 2011, he left NEWS to focus on a solo career, releasing music under Warner Music Japan until 2016, then switching to Sony Music Japan in 2018. In October 2020, he left Johnny & Associates to pursue an independent career.
In addition to acting and music, Yamashita is also active as a television host, as in Yamashita Tomohisa Route 66: Tatta Hitori no America (2012) and Shogeki! Sansedai Hikaku TV: Generation Tengoku (2013-2014). She has also been a brand ambassador for Bulgari, Dior, and Moët & Chandon, as well as being involved in philanthropic activities. In 2020, he was temporarily suspended over a drinking controversy with an underage woman, although no lawsuits were filed.
As of March 2025, Yamashita has released several solo albums, such as Supergood, Superbad (2011) and YAMA-P (2016), and held a National Concert Tour.
