Early life and education

Paul Bettany was born into a family close to the world of art. His father, Thane Bettany, was a dancer, actor, and drama teacher, while his mother, Anne Kettle, was a stage singer, theater teacher, and stage manager. He was raised in a Roman Catholic environment.

His adolescence was marked by a deep family tragedy. When Bettany was 16, her younger brother, Matthew, died at the age of 8 after falling from a roof. This event greatly affected him, making him drop out of school and leave home. To make a living, he became a street performer in London.

After a few years, he found work in a nursing home before finally enrolling and taking formal education at The Drama Centre London.

Career

Paul Bettany's acting career began on the theater stage. He appeared in numerous productions, including with the Royal Shakespeare Company. Her debut on the screen began with small roles on British television.

His name began to attract international attention through his roles in Hollywood films. Some of his best known early roles include Geoffrey Chaucer in “A Knight’s Tale” (2001) and his role in the Oscar-winning film, “A Beautiful Mind” (2001), where he met his future wife, Jennifer Connelly.

The peak of his popularity came when he joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Initially, he only voiced J.A.R.V.I.S., Tony Stark's artificial intelligence assistant in the film series “Iron Man” and “The Avengers”. Later, he transforms into one of the superhero characters, Vision, which first appeared in “Avengers: Age of Ultron” (2015). His role as Vision continued in several subsequent MCU films and was central to the story in the critically acclaimed Disney+ series, "WandaVision” (2021). Her performance in the series earned her a Primetime Emmy Award nomination.

In addition to her roles in the MCU, Bettany also starred in various films of different genres, demonstrating her acting versatility.
