Family Background
Alan Rickman was born in the Acton area of London, to a working-class family. His father, Bernard Rickman, of Irish descent, worked as a factory worker and a former World War II aircraft mechanic. His mother, Margaret Doreen Rose, of Welsh descent, was a homemaker. Alan was the second of four children. When he was 8 years old, his father died of lung cancer, leaving his mother to raise four children alone. His mother remarried in 1960, but divorced three years later.
Alan was born with a congenital defect in the form of a stiff jaw (tight jaw), which caused his voice to have a characteristic deep and lethargic tone, being one of his hallmarks as an actor.

Early Career
Before becoming an actor, Alan Rickman worked as a graphic designer. After graduating from the Royal College of Art, he founded a graphic design studio called Graphiti in SoHo, London, with friends. The Studio focused on the design of books, jackets, advertisements and magazine illustrations. However, at the age of 26, her love of acting prompted her to audition at RADA. He was accepted on a scholarship and began his professional acting career.
