Family Background
Alan Rickman was born in the Acton area of London, to a working-class family. His father, Bernard Rickman, of Irish descent, worked as a factory worker and a former World War II aircraft mechanic. His mother, Margaret Doreen Rose, of Welsh descent, was a homemaker. Alan was the second of four children. When he was 8 years old, his father died of lung cancer, leaving his mother to raise four children alone. His mother remarried in 1960, but divorced three years later.

Alan was born with a congenital defect in the form of a stiff jaw (tight jaw), which caused his voice to have a characteristic deep and lethargic tone, being one of his hallmarks as an actor.

Early Career
Before becoming an actor, Alan Rickman worked as a graphic designer. After graduating from the Royal College of Art, he founded a graphic design studio called Graphiti in SoHo, London, with friends. The Studio focused on the design of books, jackets, advertisements and magazine illustrations. However, at the age of 26, her love of acting prompted her to audition at RADA. He was accepted on a scholarship and began his professional acting career.

Join the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) in the late 1970s, performing in classical and modern theatre productions such as The Seagull (Anton Chekhov), The Brothers Karamazov (Fyodor Dostoyevsky), As You Like It, and Troilus and Cressida (William Shakespeare).
Breakthrough roles on stage were as Vicomte de Valmont in the production of RSC Les Liaisons Dangereuses (1985). His performances on the West End (1986) and Broadway (1987) earned him nominations for Tony Award.

Personal Life

Meet Rima Horton in 1965 when both were teenagers (Alan 19, Rima 18). They began living together in 1977 and married in secret in New York in 2012 after 47 years together. Their wedding was very simple; they walked across the Brooklyn Bridge and had lunch at a cafe. Alan bought a ring for $200 for Rima, although Rima did not wear it.
No children.
Rima Horton is a former Labour member of Kensington and Chelsea Borough Council (1986-2006) and lecturer in economics at Kingston University.
Alan is Honorary President International Performers Aid Trust (IPAT), an organization that helps artists and performers in poor areas.
Known as a loyal and humble person, he often became a loyal listener to friends such as Ruby Wax and praised the talents of colleagues such as Emma Thompson.
