Biography

Zoë Yadira Saldaña-Perego, better known as Zoe Saldaña, was born on June 19, 1978 in Passaic, New Jersey, United States. She is an American actress of Dominican and Puerto Rican descent, best known for her roles in blockbuster science fiction films. Her first (paternal) surname is Saldaña, while her second (maternal) surname is Nazario, following Spanish naming traditions. Zoe was raised in a bilingual family that spoke both English and Spanish.

Zoe spent most of her childhood in the Dominican Republic after her father died in a car accident when she was nine years old. There, she began to develop an interest in the performing arts, particularly dance. Zoe trained as a ballet dancer and joined various local dance companies. However, she eventually left ballet because she felt she did not want to be just part of a dance group without being able to show her individuality. She later returned to the United States with her family as a teenager and settled in Queens, New York.

Zoe's acting career began when she joined the New York theater group Faces in 1995, where she performed in various shows aimed at sending positive messages to teenagers. Her talent was discovered by a talent agent, who led her to her first big-screen role. Zoe made her acting debut on television by appearing in two episodes of the series Law & Order in 1999.
