“20th Century Girl” is a South Korean romantic drama film released on October 21, 2022, on Netflix. Set in 1999, the film tells the story of Na Bo-ra (Kim Yoo-jung), a loyal tomboy high school student who helps her best friend, Kim Yeon-du (Roh Yoon-seo), pursue her first love, Baek Hyun-jin (Park Jung-woo), before Yeon-du goes to America for heart surgery. In the process, Na Bo-ra ends up getting involved in her own love story with Poong Woon-ho (Byeon Woo-seok), Hyun-jin’s close friend. The film depicts warm friendship, sweet but dilemmatic first love, and nostalgia for the 90s with elements such as cassette tapes, payphones, and a typical school atmosphere. Although it starts off with a light and comedic tone, the story turns into a melodrama with a bittersweet ending, leaving a deep impression of loss and memories.
This film is not suitable for children under the age of 13. Although it is themed around teenagers and has a cheerful vibe at the beginning, “20th Century Girl” contains complex emotional elements such as sacrifice, loss, and death that may be difficult to understand or too heavy for children. The romance scenes are also more relevant for teenagers or young adults. However, for teenagers (13 years and above), this film can be an interesting watch because it raises the issue of friendship and first love in a relatable way, as well as providing an educational nostalgic nuance about the pre-digital era. Parents are advised to accompany their children if they watch, especially to discuss the emotions and moral messages in the story.
